A belated post on Halloween: the holiday I most like to put in the past every year ;) It always seems that by the time Halloween rolls around, the kids have been celebrating it (and eating too many treats) for weeks already! Frances was Alice in Wonderland, and Hugh was Super Why (a character from a PBS show about a superhero that solves problems by reading books). We went to the Wilson Elementary Halloween Carnival for the first time, and it truly is the neighborhood event of the season. This year, it fell on the Friday before Halloween, so we really did rock the costumes for days on end.
In keeping with Jackson Hole's reputation for quickly changeable weather, it was gorgeous the week of the carnival, and miserable the week of Halloween. So we carnival-ed in the sun and trick-or-treated in the snow six days later :) A few good friends helped us enjoy the evening by hanging out at our house (and breaking it in a little) after an hour of soggy, freezing candy-begging. But truly, our neighborhood (and our town) is an amazing place for kids on this particular holiday. Not a soul was kept inside by the weather. The little streets were packed with families, and so many people opened their doors to everyone stopping by, for drinks, snacks, whatever. Mountain-dwellers can't be stopped! (our skin is thickening)

A note about Frances' writing: The girl is a natural! She writes and writes and writes, and in her classroom, they start out not enforcing any spelling or uppercase/lowercase rules so that they are free to really get their ideas down. They introduce the rules little by little, starting in January. Frances has been writing upper and lowercase since last year, but the freedom of not having to worry about it has really allowed her to go! We have probably thirty stories at home that she's writing in her writer's workshop at school, and she's so eager now to write things on her own. She's also reading. Really, truly reading. We are so proud of her, and a little amazed at how much that component of her learning has changed since she started Kindergarten.
